10 Ways to Meet Your Intentions with Intention

We’re heading into the dog days of summer (at least here in the northern hemisphere) and that can feel like a time of slow progress, if any. But it’s actually a great time to check in with ourselves on the intentions we set back in the spring for our inner work and personal growth as well as those relationships, jobs etc. that we wanted to bring to life.

According to nature’s cycle, we’re at the half time. So stand up, stretch and clear your head!

Here we are, heading toward the bend to the end of summer; where many of our creations are in full bloom. We may even be harvesting the rewards of our efforts! But for some of those intentions we made, it’s only natural to hit a few snags on the way.

That’s why this time of year is a great time to step back and take a good long look at where we are and where we want to be. We still have time to re-set our GPS, recalculate our route, get support and of course celebrate our successes with a nice cool lemonade!

10 ways to get on track with what you want to create for yourself this year:

1.    Be your own cheering section

Now’s the time to acknowledge what you’ve accomplished in the past 6 months or so. And, I’m not just talking about those things you’ve accomplished in the “outer world.” But look to see how have you grown or changed personally. What have you learned about yourself? Acknowledge the milestones, and don’t discount the baby steps you’ve made toward those things you wanted for yourself.

2.    Re-examine your goals

Is what you set your sight on a few months back still where you want to be? Maybe things have changed as you have learned new things along the way. You may have even met your goal and have kept on going! Re-examining the goal is a good exercise to see if you are putting your energy where it needs to be.

3.    Know the real end-goal

You may have set an intention to heal a part of your life, create a certain job or relationship, or have “X” number of dollars in the bank this year. But truthfully what you are intending is a feeling.

We create through our feelings and emotions. So, it’s very important to know what the feeling is that you want in your life around what you are creating.

Let yourself imagine this life. What would it be like, how do you feel, what are you doing? Really go for this vision! If you can’t get to that feeling, it’s going to be hard to actualize it.

And, if you can stick to the feeling of what you want to create, the how you get there can come in many forms. Be open to that and don’t get too hung up on the road map. Stay open to the synchronistic events in your life that can move you forward, and be a bit curious. Acting on the things you become curious about can open new doors you never thought imaginable!

4.    Make a list

If you can see a clear road map…jump on the path. Sometimes we do get that great download and know what action is needed. When we know what we need to do, it’s time to do it!

So, make a quick list of what steps or resources may be needed to support you as you move forward. Whatever the steps are, do a little brainstorming and see what you can come up with to help you along your path. Get creative! Nobody said growth had to be boring!

5.    Reinforce the game plan

When we get close to the things we want to create, we often do funny things and those old voices start coming out to hold us back. So take time as you look at where you are and where you are going to re-affirm your vision; and beef up the game plan if need be. Get the support you may need or commit to what you know must be done, especially as we shift from summer into fall.

Things may begin to feel busier as we head back to work and school from the summer holiday. Use this energy, but don’t get too busy where you can’t attend to your projects.

6.    Re-set the GPS

If you have found yourself missing the target or not getting anywhere, don’t beat yourself up. That won’t help too much. But being honest with yourself so you can get back on track. If you need to sit yourself down and have a good talking to…do it! Change can be hard and if you are realizing that you’ve hit a wall of resistance, visit my blog entry on working with resistance.

7.    How committed are you?

It’s a good time to look at commitment. On a scale of 1-10, how committed are you to what you are creating. Be honest here…there are no right or wrong answers. But knowing where you’re energy is invested will make things much easier. Maybe you aren’t as committed to something as you thought.

If you’re not at a 10, what would it take to get you there?

If you are way below that 10…maybe it’s time to really look at this and decide if this is what you want.

8.    Know whose in charge

If you decide that your initial intention or goal isn’t for you, take a good long look at this. Ask yourself, “What part of me is really deciding this?” Resistance is tricky. We may think switching gears is for the best when it really isn’t. So check in. You may need to get some help on this from a friend or coach who can see through the sly fox who’s trying to get his way!

9.    Are you operating from the land of “should?”

If you can’t get to that 10, maybe you’ve been operating from the land of ‘should” and not where your true energy is. Let yourself come back to where you are now, not where you think you should be. Here’s a blog post to help you heal where you are.

Once you can allow yourself to be right where you are, you can go back and ask your inner GPS system to recalculate and guide you to the feeling state you want to be at—for you!

10.    Keep the vision

We humans can be super impatient! So if things seem to be going slow, take a step back and go back to #1 on the list above to remind yourself that things are happening.

We want things now, and the universe may have a different timing. Just because you don’t see it yet, doesn’t mean it’s not right for you.

Stay focused and stay true to the vision!
