The Key to Shifting Your Energy: Get Out and Try It On!

I think a lot about how we shift energy; how we move from one energetic stance to another. I teach people how to use visualization and energy tools as a way to work with energy as they move through change. The other day, however, when I was talking with a client, and giving her a homework assignment, I said, “Now you need to go out into the world and move into action, in order for your energy really to shift.”

This brought on a reaction of surprise from this client. She was very comfortable with the idea of working with her energy through the tools I’ve shown her. But, she was looking at her situation as if she could “fix” her energy and then go out on the world in a new way. I think we’ve all felt this desire at times; to just get it together and then things will all line up as we move into the world…all anew. But alas, that’s not the plan of the Universe! As a friend said to me just this morning, “This is a participatory event!”

Just what is it about shifting our energy that at times requires our deep inner attention and, other times, our being in action?

Well, working with our energy is a dance. And just like with anything, we must create harmony between the yin and the yang; the feeling and the thought; and the listening and the doing.

It can be a true balancing act between these ways of being. It’s easy to pull inward and go into deep reflection and see energetically where we are stuck or where we hold old belief patterns. We can run our energy, clear our energy…do all kinds of things, but if we stay there too long, we see no movement in our lives. We have no way to then have our energy (our information) mirrored back to us. And, our points of reference can never be updated without that. It is this updating of information (or energy) that is the shift we are looking for.

So how do we do this?

Here are a few key pointers I like to pass on.

  • Spend time each day in some kind of meditation or quiet time. Give yourself the opportunity to listen within and feel what is going on. Allow yourself to use your energetic tools as a way to connect to your Self and your energy. There’s a great deal of information that you can learn there. Here’s a guided meditation you can download to give yourself a great tool for grounding and moving within to see what’s there.
  • See your healing as a dance. There is ebb and flow and a learning of new ways. Be kind to yourself.
  • Create an intention to see your change in the world around you. As you see the changes within, look to see how the Universe conspires with you in that change. If you missed this blog post, check it for some pointers on this subject: Synchronicity: Recognize When the Universe Conspires with You!
  • Be open to your resistance and your emotions when you feel the old stuck ways still in play. Don’t let yourself get frustrated, but see these as opportunities to go back within and do more healing work. It’s a frame of reference that can take a lot of pressure off you to be perfect right of the bat! Here are some Tips to Working with Resistance.
  • Create an action plan to get you where you want to be, for whatever kind of change you are trying to make. Keep in mind though that it isn’t always our mind that needs to run the show when it comes time to the “doing.” At times, what we need to do from an energetic perspective is very different from what the mind would request of us. So let your energy be the guide. If your intuition makes a request for action, then check it out. How does it feel? Good? …Then go out and do it!
  • But don’t send your mind to the corner! When we are really focused on our intuition and energy selves we can often believe our mind to be tied into our resistance or old ways of being. If your mind is telling you something, check it out. It may be the old boogie man, or it may be a great idea! Go with your common sense—don’t throw the baby out with the bath water!
  • When you are out there testing the waters of change, watch your energy so to speak. When you have those fleeting thoughts of old, take a moment to breath and remind yourself of the inner work that you have done. Take a quick inventory of what’s there and hit the refresh button! Update those reference points—those ways of seeing yourself—in the world. That momentary panic, or negative thought of old, may just be an old glitch trying to re-surface. Dont let it. Manually reconnect to the new thoughts, the new energy and trust that the more you do this, the less you will need to do this!

Personal change is tricky. Sometimes it is easy and sometimes it takes constant attention.  We won’t know where we are though, if we don’t put it to the test to see if our change sticks! And, honestly it is often the putting it to the test that really is what shifts that old residual energy that we are trying to change.

So if you are feeling that pull to sit and go within, please do. But then get up and get out and try it on. You may need to make a few adjustment, but change can truly only happen when that energy is engaged.
