Success and the Art of Cleaning

“To freely bloom – that is my definition of success.”

—Gerry Spence, How to Argue and Win Every Time

I’m on day 8 of my Building Success: 30 Day Challenge.  (If you missed my first post about this, please check out Building Success: My 30 Day Challenge to Change the Way I Think.)  So far so good when it comes to this experiment in changing my thinking. OK I have to admit, sometimes I do have to stretch to come up with 5 successes. Can I count meditating when I do that every day? Sure…my energetic and emotional well being is that important!

Being on day 8 though, I’d still like to invite you to join me in this challenge and recognize your own success stories each and every day. Doing so does make a difference in how we think about ourselves. It can change our inner landscape. Taking time to recognize where our efforts have been successful can—and does—change our inner dialogue. We can move from feeling a little bedraggled to recognizing just how amazing each and every one of us is! And, it doesn’t take creating great feats to show how successful you are. We can find success on any given day, in and around the actions that we take when we are on the right path. And when we do…we bloom!

Someone asked me about my success list. Well I won’t go into my list here. Needless to say, some of my “successes” are more impressive than others. But oddly, the one I am most proud of to date is the fact that I washed the kitchen walls! Yep, you read that right!

Let me give you the back story. For several weeks now I have been coming home and saying, “Man, I need to clean this house up!” I know that when I do a big “deep clean,” energy really shakes loose and all kinds of interesting things start happening in my life. Day in and day out I looked around me and made a mental note to add this or that to my cleaning “wish list,” but never did it.

Well, all that changed this past weekend. I got motivated, energetically charged and really cleaned. I re-arranged furniture, re-potted plants and cleaned in corners even spiders were afraid of! And…I got on a roll and washed the kitchen walls. No, it wasn’t fun, but so needed!

You wouldn’t think that something like washing walls would ring as a my #1 success in the past 8 days, but it did. There really is something to spring cleaning—it can be a big energetic shot in the arm. Oddly enough now, when I walk into my kitchen…I beam! And better yet, even when I am not in my kitchen I’m still beaming.

I know this success may not rank up there with taking my business to the next level or connecting with friends and family…but it was clearly one of those things that was needed on my path. I needed to dig in and clear my energy, by way of my kitchen. It feels great to feel the energy flowing, and it’s all from taking that step and saying, “This is important. I’m going to succeed.” And now? When I think about this particular success, I say to myself,“Wow, I rock!”

So, I say find those things big or small that will expand you, excite you and get you to bloom. Do them and count them as a success. And, you get bonus points when you can say to yourself, “I Rock!”
